The application process follows the step outlined in SOP 306.02.01.001. 2. The inmate barber supervisor reviewed the inmate’s eligibility for institutional work and documented it on the application. 3. A medical authority determined the inmate was medically cleared to work as an inmate barber and documented it on the application. 4. A deputy warden or designee approved the inmate barber application. 5. Inmate barber applications are on file. 6. IDOC and medical staff members have signed the inmate barber’s certificate of training and it is on file. 7. The inmate acknowledged receipt of Appendix A, Inmate Barber Guidelines. Barbering Practices 8. Staff inspects the inmate barber’s hands before each barbering session. 9. Inmate barber sanitizes and cleans barbering equipment before and after each inmate. 10. Sanitizing agent is hospital grade or better, and barber follows the manufacturer’s recommendations when sanitizing equipment. 11. If inmate barber has any open wounds, inflammation, or blistering on the hands, he uses latex gloves. 12. If the inmate wears latex gloves, he washes his hands before putting on the gloves. 13. If wearing latex gloves, inmate barber changes them before each new inmate. 14. Inmate barber can explain procedures for handling a blood exposure. 15. If exposure to blood occurs, barber follows appropriate protocol. 16. If towels are used, clean towels are used with each new inmate. 17. If multi-use capes or cloths are used, a new paper neckband or clean towel is used with each new inmate. 18. Only electric clippers are used to groom an inmate’s facial hair. 19. Barbering equipment is fully functional and adequate. 20. Barbering supplies and equipment are on hand. 21. Facility provides single-use paper towels, paper neckbands, cotton balls, facial tissues, latex gloves, soap and these items are within convenient access of the haircutting area. 22. No styptic sticks, styptic pencils, alum or other astringents are used. Haircutting Work Area 23. Haircutting area is at least 10’ from tables where food is consumed. 24. Haircutting area is located adjacent to a sink with hot and cold running water. 25. Haircutting area is provided an infectious waste disposal unit for blood waste only.
