BOARD OF CORRECTION IDAPA RULE NUMBER None POLICY STATEMENT It is the policy of the Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) to develop and maintain a method for the identification and care inmates with mental illness and related behaviors. Although mental illness cannot be eliminated, IDOC is responsible for maintaining the health of individual inmates , and for ensuring that procedures are pursued to help inmates obtain and/or maintain pro-social activities , interpersonal connectedness, self-sufficiency, and to preserve life. In managing mentally ill inmates , a safe, humane, and healthful environment based on ethical, moral, and legal considerations are primary goals . PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to ensure that IDOC establishes procedures to screen, assess, and manage inmates with mental illness. SCOPE This policy applies to inmates housed in IDOC facilities, staff members, contractors, venders, and volunteers in correctional facilities . RESPONSIBILITIES The applicable division chiefs are responsible to oversee the implementation of this department policy and the development and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to achieve the following: • Screening procedures to identify mental illness of incoming inmates • Procedures for placing inmates with mental illness into specialized housing w hen needed • Methods for reporting to administrative staff when emergent actions are taken due to an inmate’s mental illness Control Number: 315 Version: 1.0 Title: Mental Health Management: Assessment, Treatment, Emergent Care Page Number: 2 of 2 • Staff training related to managing mentally ill inmates • Methods of documenting interactions with mentally ill inmates to include screenings, assessments, treatment, and interventions • Procedures for administrative review when emergency interventions occur due to mental illness REFERENCES None –End of Document–
