POLICY OF THE DEPARTMENT Inmates may participate in the athletic activities which are available at the institution facilities, depending upon their physical ability, fitness, and acceptable behavior. 02.00.00. Recreational Programs and Activities Recreational programs and activities in Department institutions and facilities shall be guided by the following: When inmates are confined in disciplinary or administrative segregation, individual exercise should be provided for those who so desire for at least one- half (1/2) hour per work day, if possible. When limitations are necessary, every feasible alternative should be explored to provide adequate exercise. As much as possible, every institution and facility shall establish recreational programs, including leisure time activity, compatible with the varying interests, activities, and physical needs of inmates. POLICY NUMBER: 601 SUBJECT: Recreation for Inmates/Participation in Athletic Sports PAGE NUMBER: 2 of 2 C O P Y Under certain conditions, recreational programs and activities may be considered as a program task to be incorporated in an inmate's rehabilitation plan. 05.02.00. Athletic Competition in the Institutions Athletic competition in the institutions shall be indicated in accordance with the following guidelines: Institutional personnel may not compete on inmate athletic teams, but may serve as instructors or coaches if they are competent and qualified. Personnel may play against institutional inmate teams if approved by the appropriate Administrator. Competition between inmate teams and outside teams held within an institution is contingent upon the Administrator's approval. Such competition should not interfere with work or training programs. Inmate athletes shall not be accorded any special privileges in order to participate in athletic events. All athletic equipment, including any trophies or prizes awarded, shall be purchased with money from the Inmate Welfare and Recreation Fund. Institution personnel should take every reasonable precaution to prevent injuries to inmate participants. 05.03.00. Outside Inmate Group Activity It is the Administrator's or his designee's responsibility to approve any outside inmate group activity. Prior to such activity, a list of those inmates who will be participating shall be submitted to the Administrator for final approval. _______________________________ _______________ Director, Department of Correction Date
