POLICY STATEMENT
It is the policy of the Idaho Board of Correction that the Idaho Department of Correction
(IDOC) (1) participate in the Idaho DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and Genetic Marker
Database Program in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 19, Chapter 55; and (2) adhere to
all guidance (both internal and external) relating to the program .
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to communicate the Board’s philosophy regarding the collection
of offender DNA samples.
SCOPE
This policy applies to all procedures created under the authority of this policy and to all
IDOC staff members involved in the supervision and management of offenders .
RESPONSIBILITY
The director of the IDOC and chiefs of the Division of Probation and Parole; Division of
Prisons; and Division of Education, Treatment, and Reentry are responsible for overseeing
the implementation of this policy and the development and implementation of a standard
operating procedure (SO P) that provides guidance to staff regarding the collection of
offender DNA samples .
At a minimum, SOPs must include processes for:
• Maintaining and updating a list of crimes that require staff to collect an offender’s
DNA;
• Collecting and documenting offender DNA samples ; and
• Tracking those offenders who require collection of a DNA sample.
